STORY TIME
Strap in. I'm taking you way back.
As you might find with most martial arts, the journey of ‘becoming better than who you were yesterday’ is what keeps me and many others coming back for more. I have always loved sports, but this one changed my life.
Truth is, I’ve been wearing a kimono since I was 8 years old. Judo was my first love— but as most first loves go, it was complicated. My mom took me to my first Judo class after my school teacher politely told her ‘she needs to release some energy’. I loved everything about Judo: seeing my friends, grappling with boys, winning tournaments— it really fed my competitive nature. But as friends began to drop out, so did my motivation to train and compete. After many tantrums during my rebellious teenage years, there was nothing my saint of a mother could say to stop me from quitting. My sensei, on the other hand, was not worried one bit. In his suave French accent, he said ‘You can walk away from Judo, but Judo never leaves you. You will be back.’ Right he was. I returned to the Judo mats and became 2021 Australian National Champion and was awarded my Black Belt in July 2022.
I’ve been back on the Judo mats, but on different mats too…
For the same reasons I loved Judo as a kid, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu became my newfound passion from day one. Often referred to as ‘human chess’, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu became my sport, my craft, and oftentimes a means to self-development.
Nowadays, you’ll find me making time to train and teach private lessons and seminars out of Gracie Barra St Peters. There's something special about watching young kids grow into their own person via a marital art (maybe because I see my young self in each of them). I am especially drawn to planting seeds of self-awareness at an early age and using jiu-jitsu as a tool for introspection and evolution. It is through competition I have learned most about the craft.
